For my year-in-review, I have chosen a Wordle to depict my experiences this year. In the Wordle includes a reflective document that I produced for one of my courses, tips that were given to me as I started my college career, significant events I completed this year, and other important factors of my freshman year of college.
Wordles take text and show how significant an item is by enlarging it. Some of the larger words in this particular Wordle include "Study", "New", "Community", "People", and "Different". This year was definitely filled with lots of hard work and studying. When starting my freshman year I told myself that I had to study hard no matter what else, because that's what I'm in college for. I ended up getting a 3.9 cumulative GPA for the year, so it all paid off. "New" definitely describes this year, in that I was living a new life - a life of independence, harder work, and an entirely new experience. The sense of community that I have felt since entering the #hottestcollegeinamerica has been remarkable. I built new families within my time with Gen-1, Honors, and the African American Cultural and Resource Center. Also, I felt that I have helped out in the community with my time at Children's Hospital. Meeting new people was definitely an important part of building my freshman year. It also was thing I was most afraid of when entering college. Now that I look back on it, I have met so many people that I now consider family. Finally, the word "Different". This basically sums it all up. Everything about college is so different than anything I have ever experienced before. There's so many different people, cultures, interests, and lifestyles at the University.
The three most significant things that happened to me this year were moving into the Gen-1 house, attending Camp Bearcats, and being elected Historian for the UC Chapter of the National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association. These 3 events depict a sort of evolution of character, in that I was so afraid of moving into a dorm, I was taught how to be a leader and more social at Camp Bearcats, and I became a leader in an organization of major importance to my career. All of these are showcased in the Wordle as well.
Another thing depicted above is the most significant honors assignment from the Gateway course. For me, it was the final presentation. In my final presentation I presented on the aforementioned Camp Bearcats. It was significant because I was so worried about getting up and presenting at the beginning of the semester, but at that moment all my fears were gone. Also, I got to share to my audience something that was important to me.
I have learned so much about myself this year. Living in a house full of new people who you are different from can do that to you. I am so happy that I decided to live on campus because it forced me to branch out of my comfort zone and it turned out to be a great learning experience that I would not change.
Right now, I feel like a totally different person than this time last year. I feel more mature and more cultured. I have learned so much and I know that I will continue to learn and shine a light on this community with my service and new found knowledge.
