Honors Intermediate Composition-Documentation
During 14FS I participated in Honors Intermediate Composition taught by Professor Lisa Beckelhimer. This was a 3-credit hour advanced English course with a normal-sized classroom of about 30 students on the University’s campus. During this course my classmates and I completed three major projects – an exploratory essay, a Research essay, and a multi-genre project.
I chose this experience firstly because I had to take Intermediate Composition as a course requirement. I figured that I would take one of the Honors sections because I knew that it would be a more advanced course that would challenge me mentally and push me to think about topics, such as rhetoric and dystopia in ways that I never have. For example, I had never heard of, let alone written, an “exploratory essay”. It was a very interesting way to research a topic. The experience definitely exceeded my expectations for that very reason. It not only taught me knew concepts, but it pushed me further, like when I had to conduct interviews for the research project. This experience is much different than my first Honors Experience, which was a self-designed research project at CCHMC. This time I was able to interact more with other students and campus faculty.
This experience was personally meaningful to me because of the research I conducted for one of the essay projects. In my research I explored first-generation college students and UC’s Gen-1 program, which I am apart of. Although, I am first-gen, it was interesting to hear other POVs on the matter. I think this will inform my future intentions because it has led me to thinking about ways that I can help incoming freshman who are first-gen. I am very grateful for this course and the professor because of the new knowledge I have acquired. I knew about how to write essays and basic concepts of composition, but now I know how to apply those concepts for a greater purpose.

Artifact-Primary Text Research Essay
I chose my artifact for this experience to be my Primary Text Research Essay on first generation college students. This essay was very near and dear to my heart because it led me to delve deeper into the minds of former and current first-generation college students. Although, I am first-gen, hearing other opinions was integral in creating a well-rounded essay. The version of the essay that I decided to include is one with revisions. I think it is important for this particular version to be seen because it shows input from my professor and how I took her advice to make the final product much stronger. Also, at the end of the essay, I was able to thank everyone involved in helping me write the essay. I believe that this essay embodies all that I was taught in this course.
